NCLUSD Long Term Independent Study Program

NCLUSD is offering a Long Term Independent Study Option for students in grades TK-12. This is a parent involvement program that offers students and parents the opportunity to participate in remote and virtual learning that addresses state standards using the district adopted core curriculum.

This is a voluntary program. Parents/students interested in this option should consider the following questions:

  • Is there evidence the student can work alone?
  • Is the student responsible for independent assignments (does he/she currently complete homework)?
  • Can the student commit to attend periodic meetings at the Independent Study classroom either in person or virtually?
  • Does the student have access to a quiet space at home to complete their schoolwork?
  • Does the student have an IEP and need daily support in addressing goals which would require attendance at school?
  • Does the student attend the Dual Language Program? If so, Long Term Independent Study may be challenging to develop literacy in English and Spanish.

Who can choose Long Term Independent Study as an option?

The program is open to students in grades TK-12 after considering the questions above.

Who will be the teacher for Independent Study?

Your child will be assigned to an Independent Study Teacher who will support them while on Independent Study.

How will attendance be tracked?

  • Attendance is based on the number of assignments engaged and completed by the student each week (not in-seat attendance).
  • Students who are out of compliance (not completing assignments or missing two consecutive IS meetings without notice) potentially could be dropped from the IS program.

How will my child receive their assignments?

The Independent Study Teacher will assign online work to your student at least weekly and will support your child throughout the week as they complete their work. Students will be required to check in either virtually or in person with their independent study teacher periodically.

What kind of work will be assigned to my student?

Teachers will use the district adopted core curriculum when assigning work to students. The goal is to provide students with relevant and engaging learning experiences that support skill development, problem solving and critical thinking.

How will my student be assessed and graded?

Students will take assessments and be graded based on site and district policy.

Can my child participate in extracurricular activities?

All students, including independent study students, will have a health screening prior to participation in any extracurricular activities.
